Notes on a changing Nature
I never would have predicted this one

Here's a newbie question -- I hope it's ok to tack it on to the latest blog entry.
I'd like to do a deed restriction or conservation easement on my land, or donate it with life estate, but it might be quite a project to find an established 'land trust' I'd feel comfortable living with, so to speak. I know a 'family trust' can be created by a few individuals to manage their own family land. Can the same sort of thing be done here?

Nokomis..
That is one for a lawyer. My suggestion would be to contact a trust near you. They can probably suggest a lawyer who specializes in easements. Go to www.lta.org for a list of trusts in your state. I do know that the recent congressional hearings are making it more likely that "family trusts" won't be sufficient, and that to be tax deductible, it will have to be left with a land trust that has protecting land as its primary purpose for being. Check out the trusts, you may be happily surprised!
